Two Covenants 50th Anniversary
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) needed a website to celebrate the 50th anniversary of two historical covenants. The website had to be targeted to both the public and OHCHR field presences and partners and accessible on any device from anywhere in the world. That included cutting-edge, high-speed smartphones as well as antiquated dial-up, low-bandwidth desktops in remote areas, and everything in between. The solution was to hard code the site in basic HTML, page by page, providing alternate text for images and other accommodations for visually impaired audiences. The site’s initial objective was to provide information about the campaign and how to get involved, including resources that partners can use to support the campaign. The site also featured human stories surrounding the covenants, and links to the International Bill of Rights. I created an animated, interactive quiz that dispels various human rights myths and further engages the audience. The quiz asks a series of multiple-choice questions, some based on fundamental human rights cases, and players must decide if a human rights violation truly exists in the scenario and why. Points are earned with each question, and the game concludes by awarding the player a title that can be shared on social media, encouraging others to learn more through the power of play, engagement, and fun.
